series"Doll House"
A Series of self-portraits as a commentary on a harmful relationship between
today's media and self-image
of women
Sylvia Sokolowska graduated from OCAD in 2002
specializing in silver-smithing and Jewellery Design. For the
last couple of years she has worked as a jeweller for private
companies
and clients. Photography has been a long- time passion for Sylvia,
it is also another creative outlet where she explores ideas of
self in relation to society's expectations, relationships and
self knowledge.
Her latest series of works is called ‘‘Doll House`` and was constructed
to comment on a negative relationship between today’s culture and the image
of women. Women are often portrayed as ‘living dolls’: dehumanized,
flawless beauties stripped away from their real character. This representation
happens to be highly abusive for it conditions the public and women themselves
to view femininity form a superficial perspective. Women become a victim by trying
to measure up to an ideal that does not exist.
Sylvia’s photographs are self-portraits. In these works she steps into
the shoes of a ‘living doll’ and attempts to portray a story about
a real world made of hurt, dramatic sadness and isolation, process of embracing,
fighting and conquering her own little demons. It is a story of a girl that simultaneously
lives within illusion and reality.
